Thorne’s Marketplace:  Re-Positioning a renovated 1980’s Multi-tenanted market

Thorne’s marketplace, originally a classic small town department store in Downtown Northampton, was transformed in the 1980’s into an innovative multi-tenanted marketplace of thirty independent specialty retailers. 

After 20 plus years of operating, market conditions changed and the multi-storied building needed visual and physical repairs. Although sales were still exceedingly high among some of the tenants, there were others who were starting to lose market share.

Todreas Hanley Associates studied the market and the building to determine how Thorne’s could be positioned in the current regional market. Key findings included identifying: several significant voids in the tenant mix;  new markets to target; new local and regional competition to overcome; internal management practices to strengthen. 

Finally, based on the market analysis and study findings, THA recommended a new market position for the center and strategies for the overhaul.
